harbin jan 13-16 2009

"The annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival has been held since 1963. It had been interrupted for a number of years during the Cultural Revolution until it was resumed in 1985. Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang province of People's Republic of China, is one of the sources of ice and snow culture in the world. Geographically, it is located in Northeast China under the direct influence of the cold winter wind from Siberia. The average temperature in summer is 21.2 degrees Celsius, -16.8 degrees Celsius in winter. It can be as cold as - 38.1 degrees Celsius in winter.

Officially, the festival starts from January 5th and it lasts one month. However often the exhibitions open earlier and last longer, weather permitting. Ice sculpture decoration ranges from the modern technology of lasers to traditional ice lanterns. There are ice lantern park touring activities held in many parks in the city. Winter activities in the festival include Yabuli alpine skiing, winter-swimming in Songhua River, and the ice-lantern exhibition in Zhaolin Garden. Snow carving and ice and snow recreations are world famous.

The Harbin festival is one of the world's four largest ice and snow festivals, along with Japan's Sapporo Snow Festival, Canada's Quebec City Winter Carnival, and Norway's Ski Festival. (1)"

Our Harbin trip lasted three almost four days. The train we took there was an overnight train with a trip lasting about 10 hours so that we went to sleep when we got onto the train and by the time we woke up, we were preparing for arrival. On the way there we slept in triple bunks . The condition of the train was a lot nicer than I expected and tickets for that car costs about 250RMB which is the equivalent of 37USD. On the way back we rode in the nicer car with tickets costing about 450RMB or 66USD. There were four people to one room on this car. The bathroom and the hand washing rooms were nicer and the rooms themselves had doors and locks whereas the on the first train the bunks were in an open area. no doors, no privacy, but clean. you had to use a stick to flush the toilet and it was a squatter where as the toilet on the train ride back was a western airport style toilet.

The temperature when we were there averaged about -20C in the day and about -25C at night, at least that is what I think the tour guide was saying. We got the chance to watch two middle aged men and two middle aged women swimming in a lake during the day. they dove from the platform into the man made lake. Before hand, they walked around and took pictures with the spectators. Taking my hand out of my coat hurt, even with gloves on I could not keep it out more than 5 minutes without it starting to freeze so i couldn't even imagine swimming at that temperature! It was here also that you could sit on chairs and push your way across the ice with pics. Afterwards me and my friend Jessie went horseback riding! It was a short ride but it was fun. The horses did not need anyone to guide them. they knew where to go and when to turn back. It was a great time!

the school trip was with a tour guide and bus so everything was planned out nicely with regularly scheduled breakfast, lunch, and dinners. the first place we went to was a park with sculptures all made of ice. all of them were very impressive and there were at least 40 more sculptures that I did not get a chance to take pictures of.

The second park was full of ice sculptures and ice lanterns. All very large and all very impressive.

Harbin also had somewhat of a russian influence in that they had russian chocolates, russian nesting dolls, and a beautiful russian church that we visited.

the second day before we visited the Russian church we went to a ski and snowtube park. you could only choose to do one so i picked snow tubing! it was fun! at one point we had 10 people all tied together like a roller coaster ride.
